Public Finance

Public finance is concerned with the government’s revenue-raising measures which mainly come from taxation. We can say therefore that the primary rationale for the existence of the government is the provision of public services which the private sector may not be able to provide. An example is national defence which is best left for the government to accomplish since national security cannot be compromised and be made subject to the dictates of profit. A close term for public finance is government finance which both comprise the broader term of public economics. A philosophical question that always confronts policy makers in government is the efficient allocation of often limited government finances. An example here is the dilemma of which public infrastructure project to pursue in view of conflicting demands from the electorate given its limited resources. Governments should ideally pursue an agenda of social justice such as social security, education and health care for the poor segments of its citizenry. It is not unheard for governments to often endorse public programs even without the necessary funding by resorting to deficit spending, especially during an election year.
